Just five days before the two teams face off on Monday Night Football, the Chicago Bears added former Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher Cassius Marsh to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Marsh was also designated as one of Chicago’s four practice squad protections, which means he won’t be able to sign with another club until after the Bears-Steelers game on November 8.
The aforementioned maneuverings might be explained by Chicago’s All-Pro edge rusher, Khalil Mack, who has been out with a foot injury. However, the cynical will notice that the Bears also dismissed rookie outside linebacker Sam Kamara, implying that Chicago is seeking to gather information on the Steelers before of their Week 9 matchup.
History of Cassius Marsh with the Steelers
Marsh, 29, joined the Steelers in December 2020 after being signed off the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad after the season-ending ACL rupture sustained by outside linebacker Bud Dupree. Marsh was activated by the Steelers only a few days later, and he only played in one game, recording two solo tackles against the Colts on December 27, 2020. He may have played more if he hadn’t been placed on the COVID-19/Reserve list after being identified as a “close contact” of Steelers CB Joe Haden. He didn’t get off the list until January 7, 2021.
The Steelers re-signed the former UCLA product, who was an unrestricted free agent, in March 2021. For the most of training camp and the preseason, he was the second-team left outside linebacker, but he was released in the last round of roster cuts on August 31, 2021. In effect, undrafted free agent Jamir Jones won his position over Miami’s 2021 sixth-round selection Quincy Roche, who was cut and then claimed by the New York Giants.

The Next Steps in Marsh’s NFL Career
Marsh has played for seven different teams since being chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in 2014, including the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He made news in July when he suggested the Patriots “handle players like trash” on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast with Tom Segura. He also slammed an anonymous previous Jaguars coach’s “God-awful” comments, presumably alluding to ex-Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone, who was dismissed in January 2021 after a 1-15 season.
Nickerson Jr. joins the Texans as a free agent.
According to veteran NFL writer Aaron Wilson, who covers the Texans, the son of former Steelers linebacker Hardy Nickerson was elevated to the 53-man roster of the Houston Texans on Wednesday.

According to Pro Football Reference, Nickerson Jr., 27, plays the same position as his father and has been in the NFL since 2017, when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s played in 53 games for three different teams since then, including the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans.
His father was a fifth-round draft selection of the Steelers in 1987 and spent six seasons with the team before moving on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for another seven years, where he was named to the Pro Bowl five times. He played two seasons in Jacksonville and one in Green Bay to finish his NFL career.
