Paradox Interactive is a Swedish video game publisher founded in 1994. The company publishes games on all major platforms.
Paradox Interactive is a Swedish video game developer, publisher and digital distributor. The company was founded in 1993 by Fredrik Wester and currently has over 100 employees.
After an employee poll revealed allegations of gender discrimination among Paradox Interactive employees, a new study paints a bleak image of the Swedish publisher.
Female employees say that the business is “obviously male-dominated” and has a “culture of silence,” and that the company’s management structure makes it difficult to handle harassment among junior employees.
According to Svenska Dagbladet (via Eurogamer), Paradox previously employed a senior manager with a history of “unwelcome advances and harassment.”
“He made much too much physical contact with the female workers of the company. A hand on the crotch or extremely near embraces with his face pressed against one’s neck, “is how a female colleague who worked with the guy before he joined Paradox Interactive described the encounter.
In 2016, the same anonymous employee won a case against the man’s previous employer, earning a roughly 270k Swedish kroner ($30.6k) compensation. He joined Paradox only months after the case, according to the article, and left in August 2021.
Several women told the newspaper that harassment was most commonly perpetrated by males in high positions, and that it was often directed at those lower in the hierarchy.
An employee who worked at Paradox for ten years recounted being escorted out of a meeting and having to delete comments directed at the business from its internal Slack channel while a higher-up looked on. Men, according to claims, have the ultimate say in meetings.
“Being a woman at this business is difficult,” one female employee told Eurogamer. “‘You’re just whining?’ people say. Why is it more difficult for women?’ However, if a man had brought up the same issues, it would have been a legitimate point of view.”
Other workers told Eurogamer that management isn’t doing enough to assist junior employees who have been harassed, owing to middle management’s emphasis on satisfying top personnel.
“If I bring anything to my middle management boss, he won’t address it to senior management because he’ll be hated,” one unnamed employee told the publication.
Employees think the business can turn things around “if top management is ready to assist, if they are willing to alter their view of what harassment is.”
After acting improperly with a colleague in 2018, Paradox Interactive’s CEO stated last month that he would not be actively engaged in the company’s handling of mistreatment incidents.
